Build stuff that people want!

Build stuff that people want, well if that was easy then we’d all have really successful startups, but about 93% of new startups fail.

Building stuff that people want is actually really hard. If we try to understand how to build stuff that people want, we can significantly improve the success rate of startups.

I recently discovered an innovation framework known as jobs to be done. The theory on how companies can develop products and services that customers actually want and need.

In the 1990s, John, Rick, and Bob began working together to combine their respective experiences into the first Customer Jobs principles. They looked at 20,000 products, some of them from small startups, some of them from big Fortune 100 companies and of those 93% of them failed. They either flat-out failed or they just never met the expectations of the people who had put all the money, time and energy.

Then they looked at the other 7% and examined what makes these unique What’s the correlating factor here? Is it just luck or is there something else at play?

“People buy products and services to get a job done”.
